Here are the steps you should take to clean out your compromised email account after speaking with UM IT Help (406-243-4357, 120 Social Sciences Building). We have found it best to follow these steps in the order listed.
1. Recover Deleted Items: Restore any that you did not permanently delete
- Click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
- At the top of the email list click on Recover items deleted from this folder
- Scroll through the list and drag and drop items to restore into the Inbox
- Click on Empty Folder at the top of the messages list
2. Deleted Items: Restore any items you did not delete
- Click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
- Scroll through the list and drag and drop items to restore into the Inbox
- Click on Empty Folder at the top of the messages list
3. Sent Items: Delete any items associated with spam
- Click on Sent Items in the left-hand navigation pane
- Go through the list and click on the circle in front of items you want to delete
- You can select a range of messages by clicking on the first message to delete, scrolling down to the last one you want to delete and selecting it while holding down Shift key.
- Click on the Delete option at the top of the message list
4. Inbox: Delete any bounce back messages associated with spam
- Use the Sweep feature in UMConnect to delete all messages from the same sender.
- Select a bounce back message
- Click on Sweep at the top of the messages list
- The default options selected are to move all messages from the Inbox folder to Deleted items so click OK.
- Continue this process for each remaining bounce back message
5. Empty your Deleted Items folder again
- Right-mouse click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
- Select Empty Folder
6. Purge your Recovered Deleted Items folder
- Click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
- At the top of the email list click on Recover items deleted from this folder
- Click on Empty Folder at the top of the messages list
