Compromised Account Cleanup

Here are the steps you should take to clean out your compromised email account after speaking with UM IT Help (406-243-4357, 120 Social Sciences Building).  We have found it best to follow these steps in the order listed.

1. Recover Deleted Items: Restore any that you did not permanently delete

  1. Click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
    1. At the top of the email list click on Recover items deleted from this folder
    2. Scroll through the list and drag and drop items to restore into the Inbox
      1. Click on Empty Folder at the top of the messages list

2. Deleted Items: Restore any items you did not delete

  1. Click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
  2. Scroll through the list and drag and drop items to restore into the Inbox
  3. Click on Empty Folder at the top of the messages list

3. Sent Items: Delete any items associated with spam

  1. Click on Sent Items in the left-hand navigation pane
    1. Go through the list and click on the circle in front of items you want to delete
      1. You can select a range of messages by clicking on the first message to delete, scrolling down to the last one you want to delete and selecting it while holding down Shift key.
    2. Click on the Delete option at the top of the message list

4. Inbox:  Delete any bounce back messages associated with spam

  1. Use the Sweep feature in UMConnect to delete all messages from the same sender.
    1. Select a bounce back message
    2. Click on Sweep at the top of the messages list
      1. The default options selected are to move all messages from the Inbox folder to Deleted items so click OK.
      2. Continue this process for each remaining bounce back message

5. Empty your Deleted Items folder again

  1. Right-mouse click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
  2. Select Empty Folder

6. Purge your Recovered Deleted Items folder

  1. Click on Deleted Items in the left-hand navigation pane
    1. At the top of the email list click on Recover items deleted from this folder
    2. Click on Empty Folder at the top of the messages list
