This Knowledge Base article presents the things required to get the most out of your meeting with the Assistive Technology Specialist. Here, you will be instructed what to bring and where you can get the assistance you may require to receive the highest benefit from your meeting.

Body

Eligibility

UM students, who have accommodations and are approved by Disability Services for Students, can receive Assistive Technology demonstration, training, and authorization of usage of AT.

Schedule Assistive Technology Appointments

Assistive Technology support is available at IT Accessible Technology Services in Social Sciences Room 126. To schedule an appointment with the Assistive Technology Coordinator, fill out an AT Technology appointment request. Indicate what kind of computer, smartphone, or tablet you will be bringing to the appointment and the assistive technology you are requesting.  Please be advised, many assistive technology software solutions are not supported on Google Chrome books and are not recommended for use with assistive technology. Additionally, Android devices may encounter similar issues with assistive technologies.

What to Do Before Your Meeting

  • Know how to log into your UM student email and Cyberbear.
  • Know your student ID (790) number.
  • Know your student net ID. (ab123456).
  • Have your computer/smartphone/tablet’s operating system fully up to date.
  • Have your computer/smartphone/tablet’s logged into UM’s eduroam network if on campus.
  • If you are going to be utilizing an iOS device, know your Apple ID information.
  • If you are using an Android Device, know your Google Play information.

Note About Your Appointment

  • Appointments are typically over Zoom and may last between one hour to an hour and a half in length (depending on computer functionality and internet speed). Training can be learning intensive. Distractions will prevent you from receiving the full benefit of the training. Make sure you are able to spend this much time. If not, please fill out the following form and reschedule for a time more suitable. If you have children or pets (unless you have a service animal accommodation from ODE), it is requested you sequester them from the meeting.
  • The purpose of this appointment is to help you learn:
    • How to use the available assistive technologies as they pertain to your disability and device.
    • How to complete and submit the alternative format conversion forms.
    • How to download and access alternative formats.
