University Network Usage Policies and End User License Agreement

Residents agreeing to this End User License Agreement (EULA) must use the University Network Service in an ethical and lawful manner. The use of University Network is a privilege, not a right, which may be revoked for misuse.

A resident given access to the University Network service may not permit another person to use the system(s) without UM's express consent. A resident provided access to the University Network service is responsible for the proper use of the resource, including proper password protection.

The use of loopholes or specific tools to circumvent information systems or network security, the knowledge of special passwords, or the covert acquisition of passwords to damage information systems, obtain extra resources, take resources from another user, or gain access or control of any system for which proper authorization has not been granted is expressly prohibited.

A resident's University Network usage privileges may be suspended immediately upon the discovery of a possible violation of any policy herein. Such suspected violations will be confidentially reported to the appropriate authority.

A violation of this policy will be dealt with in the same manner as a violation of other university policies and may result in a disciplinary review. In such a review, the full range of disciplinary sanctions is available, including the loss of information systems usage privileges, dismissal from the University and legal action. In some cases, violation of this policy may constitute a criminal offense under the Montana Codes Annotated (MCA).

The following policies address the proper use of The University of Montana's network including wired and wireless networks. These policies are subject to change.

1. Unauthorized networking equipment such as routers and wireless access points, etc. is prohibited from use on the network.
2. Network users may not assign themselves network settings other than those supplied by the University.
3. Network services and wiring may not be modified or extended beyond their intended use including the intended user who has paid for the service. Only the person paying for the service is entitled to use it, and their machine may not be used as a pass-through to provide network connectivity to devices. This policy applies to all University network infrastructure, Cable TV and other services.
4. For security reasons, Residence Life requires users to register devices for University Network service and log on to access the campus resources. Users are prohibited from attempting to circumvent the authentication systems. In addition, users are prohibited from hiding their identity or impersonating another's identity while using the University Network service.
5. Network users are responsible for any network activity from devices registered to their Student ID or Guest ID.
6. Federal law prohibits the transmission (sharing) of copyrighted materials without express written permission from the copyright holder. Copyrighted works (including but not limited to original writings, software, movies and music) may not be shared on the network.
7. The Residence Life Office reserves the right to restrict access and shape network traffic to any service detrimental to The University of Montana's information resources. Attempts to bypass these restrictions (such as the use of tunneling protocols) will be considered a violation of this policy.
8. The University of Montana does not allow network users to run SMTP or Kerberos services on wireless or University Networks.
9. Audio, video and game servers are allowed on hardwire (non-wireless) networks, but due to network bandwidth concerns may be disconnected without notice if they affect the performance of the University's networks. In addition, all use must comply with existing copyright laws.
10. The use of defective or malfunctioning equipment or software on the network will result in the owner of the registered offending device having University Network service disabled without prior notification. The resident will be responsible for any and all damage associated with this defective or malfunctioning equipment or software.
11. Registration of a domain to a UM IP address is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to direct DNS resolution and DNS aliasing.
12. Hardware and/or software designed to detect and exploit network vulnerabilities is forbidden on The University of Montana networks.
13. For residents living in Residence Life housing or otherwise paying for University Network service, refunds are not offered for interruptions of service. This includes the disabling of a resident's University Network service as a result of intentional or unintentional violations of University computing policies. Furthermore, in no circumstance will refunds be available for past unused service.
14. University Network users are required to run required anti-virus software and have all system updates and patches installed on applicable registered devices.
15. Violation of any of these policies could result in loss of service, Student Conduct violations or penalties under other applicable laws or regulations.
