JAMF Migration

The University of Montana Information Technology department is migrating Apple device management to the JAMF Apple Management platform this summer. JAMF is the gold standard in the industry for Apple device management. Our goal with this migration is to provide a better user experience along with better service to our Apple device users.

Migrating University managed Apple devices to JAMF is straightforward for users, continue reading for instructions. Migration will initially be available for users to kick off at their convenience. As we near the end of the summer, migration will become required and will be started on devices automatically.

WARNING: If you are not in the Missoula area, please contact UM IT before beginning migration!

Pre Migration Steps:

  1. Migration requires a restart of your Mac! Save all files and close all programs on your Mac before beginning the migration process to prevent data loss!

  2. Please confirm that your Microsoft password has been synced to the local account on your Mac.
To do this, click on the Mosyle Sync button in the top right of your screen and click "Sync local password with Microsoft":

You will be prompted to enter your Microsoft password:

Finally, you will be asked to enter the password of your local MacOS account. This password will be the password you use to unlock the Mac. The password should be your current Microsoft password or a previous Microsoft password if your account has not been synced recently. If you are met with the error "Invalid Password" then you will need to try another password or contact UM IT. Otherwise, if the prompt clears your Microsoft password has been successfully synced to your local MacOS account.

  3. Logging into the Mac after migration will require Internet access. Please consider connecting to a wired Internet connection during migration. Otherwise, you will need to ensure your Mac has been connected to Wireless Self Registration before continuing if you are performing the migration on Campus. Migration:

When migration kicks off, you will be presented with a prompt to start migration or defer migration to a more convenient time. We are restricting the number of deferrals due to our need to complete this migration before the end of August 2024. Migration will only take between 10-20 minutes to complete depending on the speed of your Mac.

Once the option to begin migration has been selected, your Mac will begin disconnecting from the old management system.

While migrating you will see messages like this pop onto your screen. These are caused by management profiles no longer being installed. You do not need to worry about these notifications, click through the pop-ups, or move them out of your way. They will go away after the migration has been completed.

You will next receive a series of slides showing you steps for re-enrolling your Mac into management. Macs on MacOS Sonoma will receive a larger full-screen prompt for enrollment. Follow these steps to re-enroll your Mac into management.

If your Mac was previously encrypted with FileVault, you will be prompted to enter your password to allow Jamf to reissue a recovery key for your Mac. All Macs going forward are required to be encrypted. You will receive a prompt to enable FileVault on the next sign-in if FileVault is not already enabled.

Next, the migration tool will begin cleanup and installation of the new sign-in screen. You will be prompted to restart your Mac once the installation has been completed. This process can take some time depending on the speed of your Mac. Please be patient and allow for this process to complete and prompt you to restart.

Once you have restarted, you will land on the new Microsoft Sign-In screen. Enter your first.last@umt.edu credentials to sign back into the Mac. If the sign-in screen is constantly loading, you are most likely not connected to the internet. Check your inernet connection or click on the Wi-Fi icon in the top right of the screen to connect to Wi-Fi.

NOTE: Eduroam does not work on this screen due to limitations within MacOS. If you are on Campus, use grizzlyguest if you have registered your device through Wireless Self Registration.

Post Migration Steps:

FileVault:

When signing back into your Mac, you will be prompted to enable FileVault disk encryption if it is not already enabled. FileVault encrypts the data on your Mac and keeps it safe if your Mac ever falls into the wrong hands.

After enabling FileVault, you will be required to unlock your Mac before loading to the main sign-in screen. You will need to enter your password after restarting or powering on your Mac.

Self Service

After signing back into your Mac, take a moment to check out the new Self Service application. Self Service is the new software store on managed MacOS devices and will allow you to download Applications and updates without administrator credentials. Self Service is a complete replacement for the Managed Software Center.

You will occasionally receive notifications from Self Service to close applications that have updates waiting to be installed. You will have 24 hours to close the listed application before Self Service automatically closes and updates that application. Updates for applications are very quick.
