GrizPortal Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Explore Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about University of Montana’s information dashboard, GrizPortal.

Q: I received an error (e.g. Contact Your Administrator, 431: Request Header Fields Too Large). GrizPortal isn't working for me.
A:  You may need to clear your cache, cookies, or history. Here is a helpful article for how to do that.

One way to check to see if clearing your cache, cookies, or history is the resolution that you will need: open GrizPortal in an incognito or private window. (Here's the GrizPortal link for you to copy/paste into that window: https://experience.elluciancloud.com/tuomm/) If the error goes away and you are able to successfully navigate through GrizPortal, then the issue will be resolved by clearing your cache, cookies, and history.

For the "Contact Your Administrator" error, you will need to clear your cache, cookies, and history to resolve that error.

For the 431 error in particular, you're getting that because of your web browser's stored cookies associated with the umt.edu domain. This issue can occur as a cumulative effect of visiting various UMT websites and applications that add cookies to your web browser which are scoped to the umt.edu domain name. You may eventually accumulate enough cookies to overwhelm the website or application that you are attempting to visit. Following the steps to clear your browser's cookies will help you with this issue.

Q: Why are there locked cards?
A: Certain cards have special significance over the course of the academic year and will be "locked" in place to ensure ready access during those periods.

Q: I understand that GrizPortal roles determine which cards I see. How can I see what roles are assigned to me?
A: Go to your GrizPortal Account – click on the circle with your first initial on the right side of the screen. Click on View Profile. Click on the drop-down next to Roles.

Q: When I click on the cards that have the words “Self-Service,” they take me to areas that look exactly like what we called CyberBear – is that correct?
A: Yes, that’s correct. All these years, we have basically called the Banner Self-Service pages by the name “CyberBear.”

Q: Where can I find items that I used to find through the Student Services link on CyberBear?
A: You will find items like the academic, financial aid, and student accounts links through the Student Self-Service/Student Dashboard card.

Q: Where do I go to change my course registration?
A: If you are thinking about changing your course registration and want to make sure that you're still on a path to graduating, please talk with your advisor.

For where you go to make the change using the GrizPortal cards: It depends on what part of the term we are in. If it is before a term starts or the term has started but it's close to the beginning of the term, you can change your registration through the Registration Self-Service/Registration Dashboard card. If you need to add, change, or drop from a course that has already started and it's a few weeks into the term, then you'll use the Course Add/Change/Drop link on the Registration card.

Q: How can I get to my student bill?
A: You can get to the Nelnet QuikPay portal by using the "Student Account and Billing" card on the GrizPortal.

Q: Who do I contact about personal data that is wrong?
A: There are some pieces of personal/biographical data that you can correct yourself, and there are several ways to get to the place to edit them. The easiest way is to go through the Personal Information card and then edit from there. If you find that there are pieces you cannot edit, then you will need to contact the Registrar's Office or HR, depending on what your relationship is with the university:

  • For Students: You will need to complete the Correction/Update to Personal Information form (PDF). It's on the Registrar's Office's forms page, under the Student Records & Privacy section. This form is used for updates/corrections to legal sex, marital status, social security number, date of birth, and citizenship. Alongside the form, the Registrar's Office will need a government issued photo ID and appropriate documentation to verify the change/correction. The form must be notarized if not submitted in person at the Registrar's Office
  • For Employees: For anything that you cannot edit via the Personal Information card on GrizPortal (e.g. marital status, University employee address), please contact Human Resources. You can create an AskHR ticket or email AskHR@mso.umt.edu.

Q: Where can I find items that I used to find through the Employee link on CyberBear?
A: You will find items like the leave balances and pay stubs links through the Employee Self-Service/Employee Dashboard card. If your department has electronic time cards and approvals, this is the area where you will see these options.

Q: Where can I find items that I used to find through the Faculty link on CyberBear?
A: You will find items like the Faculty Grade Entry and class lists links through the Faculty Self-Service/Faculty Dashboard card.

Q: Why is my student NetID showing? I am not a student.
A: GrizPortal does not have separate student and employee accounts. This is actually the same as it was with the CyberBear dashboard, but this new visualization puts the combined identities front and center. If you are not seeing cards on your home GrizPortal page that you were accustomed to seeing in CyberBear, be sure to explore the other cards and bookmark them so they show on your home GrizPortal page.

Q: Why am I seeing student-related cards? I am not a student.
A: Some roles (e.g. Advisors, Instructors) will use student-related cards. We are also aware of an issue with some employees who are former students (even just one class) seeing student cards, and we are investigating this issue.

Q: Who do I contact about an issue with the “Other Address” that is showing?
A: UM IT is aware of an issue with old addresses showing up on the GrizPortal profile. We are working on it and appreciate your patience.
