Dialing instructions

All telephones on UM system have a 243 prefix.

To dial:

  • Starting October 24, 2021, all calls in Montana will require caller to dial "406" area code plus the 7-digit phone number.
  • On campus calls (406) 243-xxxx : dial four digits only, as shown in directory. (leading digits are not required)
  • Locally : dial 9 + 11 digits : dial 9 1 406 + 7 digits
  • In-state/out-of-state: dial 9 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number
  • Toll-free numbers : dial 9 + 1 + 800, 822, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888 + 7 digits (700 and 900 numbers cannot be dialed from campus telephones.)

Directory Assistance

  • Campus: http://www.umt.edu/directory/
  • Directory Assistance is billed on a per-call basis. Depending on your area, rates may vary from $2.00 to $8.00 per call. Directory Assistance calls are subject to the charges regardless of the results. For example, if the number is not available because it is a non-published listing, you will still be charged for the call to Directory Assistance.
  • Local information: dial 9 + 1411
  • In-state/out-of-state: dial 9 + 1 + area code + 555-1212
  • Off-campus directory assistance: (Pending)

Note: Phones with local access only cannot dial directory assistance.

Long Distance Dialing

  • In-state/out-of-state U.S calls: dial 9 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number
  • International to Canada: dial 9 + 1 + area code + 7 digit number (Class 04 phones only)
  • International overseas: dial 9 + 011 + country code + city code + number (Class 04 phones only)
  • Other long distance calls: follow the instructions on the back of the calling card or prepaid card.

Note: There is no third number billing from campus.

How do I access and use voicemail?

To access voice mail dial: 6245 (MAIL)

From an outside line call: (406) 243-6245

Log in with your 4-digit campus extension (followed by a pound sign (#)) then your voice mailbox password (followed by #)

Parameters and tips

  • Password must be 5-15 digits long.
  • You may not use your extension, have only consecutive numbers or just one digit repeated.
  • Messages that have been listened to will be deleted after 7 days.
  • Callers can bypass a voice mail greeting by pressing “#”.
  • If you do not record a personal verification, the system will attempt to pronounce your name as entered into the voice mail system with automated speech.
  • Should your mailbox become disabled, contact UM IT Helpdesk at 243-HELP (4357)

Log on

Log on from your campus telephone with the MESSAGE key:

  • Lift handset or listen for dial tone
  • Press MESSAGE key or dial 6245
  • Enter password followed by #

Alternative log on from outside line:

  • Dial 406-243-6245
  • “To access your mailbox press #, to leave message for someone on the system enter their number.”
  • Please enter your mailbox number followed by #
  • Enter password followed by #

Change password

Password must be a minimum of 5 digits

  • Log on to MAILBOX
  • Press 84
  • Enter current password followed by #
  • Enter new password followed by #
  • Enter new password again followed by # (Hear..”Your password has been changed”)

Record personal verification

  • Log on to MAILBOX
  • Press 82
  • Press 9 for Personal Verification (Hear..”The personal verification is…” or “There is no name for personal verification of mailbox…”)
  • Press 5 to record and wait for tone, then speak your name.
  • Press # to stop recording (Hear...”The personal verification is…”)
  • Press 2 to hear name again
  • Press 5 to re-record and # to stop recording
  • Press 4 to exit to main menu

Record or change personal greeting

To record greetings:

  • Log on to MAILBOX
  • Press 82
  • Press 1 for Personal Greeting;  Press 2 for Optional Greetings; Press 3 for Extended Absence Greeting
  • (FOLLOW VOICE PROMPTS AS BELOW)
  • Press 2 to play above selected greeting
  • Press 5 and wait for tone to record
  • Press # when greeting is complete           
  • Press 2 to replay greeting
  • Press 5 to re-record and # to stop recording
  • Pres 76 to delete the greeting accessed above
  • Press * for help and available options
  • Press 4 to exit to main menu

Note: Upon recording, the Extended Absence Greeting becomes active. Expiration of the Extended Absence Greeting can be set through the “Voice Mail Web Access” interface, under “Preferences,” “Greetings.” Optionally - the greeting can be deleted immediately through the telephone interface. Access the greeting and press “76” as described above.

Playing your messages

  • Log on to MAILBOX
  • Press 2 to play message
  • Press 2 to play message again
  • Press # to pause during playback
  • Press 2 to continue
  • Press 1 to skip backward 5 seconds
  • Press 3 to skip forward 5 seconds
  • Press 76 to delete message
  • Press 76 to restore message (this only possible during the same voicemail call session)

Note: Messages are automatically saved unless deleted by user or system parameters.

Navigating between messages

  • Press 6 to move to next message
  • Press 4 to move to previous message
  • Press 86 plus message number plus # to go to a specific message

Reply to messages / call sender / forwarding messages

Reply to/call sender/forward a message from another user

  • Press 71 to reply
  • To attach original message press 9 for yes or 6 for no
  • To begin recording press 5 to end recording press #
  • Press 2 to play message
  • Press 79 to send message
  • Press 76 to delete

Urgent=1; Private=4; Time delivery=6

  • To call the sender of the message when listening to the message
  • Press 9 which rings the user’s telephone

To forward a message from your mailbox to another user’s mailbox

  • Press 73 for the forwarding prompt
  • Enter the mailbox number or a name followed by  #
  • Enter additional mailbox numbers separated by #
  • Press additional # to end the list
  • Press 5 and wait for tone to record your message
  • Press # to stop recording
  • Press 2 to play message
  • Press 79 to send the message
  • Press 76 to delete

Compose a message

Allows leaving a message in multiple mailboxes

  • Log on to MAILBOX
  • Press 75
  • As prompted, enter mailbox number followed by #
  • Enter additional mailbox numbers separated by #
  • Press additional # to end the list
  • Press 5 and wait for tone to record your message
  • Press # to stop recording
  • Press 2 to listen to message
  • Press 79 to send message
  • Press 76 to delete OR
  • Press 70 to hear message options (optional)

The help service

  • Press * for general help
  • Press 7* for message command help
  • Press 8* for mailbox command help
  • To hang up press 83

To bypass personal greeting

  • Press 5 or #
  • Wait for tone and record message

Message blocking

With the Incoming Messages Blocking option, you can choose if you want Messaging to allow or prevent your callers from leaving voice messages.

  • Press 80
  • For message blocking, press 7
  • To turn blocking on press 1, to turn blocking on only when your extended absence greeting is recording press 3.
  • To exit press #

Express messaging

To leave a message for someone without directly ringing their extension

  • Dial 3940
  • When prompted enter mailbox number followed by #
  • Wait for tone and record message
  • Hang up when finished or press 1

If you answer multiple lines from your phone you may experience difficulties using express messaging.

Cost and Charges

One-time activation charge:

  • $25 per telephone. Additional labor charges may apply for more advanced options.
  • $25 per network port. 
  • There is no charge for de-activating ports or a telephone.

Network charges:

  • As of July 1, 2017 there is no recurring monthly telephone or network service charge for UM-funded units. For units not directly funded by UM (i.e. the Bookstore), there is an $8 per month recurring charge per network port.

Telephone charges:

  • As of July 1, 2017 there is no recurring monthly telephone or network service charge for UM-funded units.
  • Long-distance charges, billed by the State of Montana, will still apply (for telephone service).

Name change update for Campus Telephone Caller ID, Voice Mail Programming, Telephone Related Database systems. Related: To update your University of Montana work number, (or other employee personal information) listed in the UM Online Directory ( http://www.umt.edu/directory); please submit a hard copy of the Personal Information Form to Human Resource Services in Lommasson 252.
Repairs for telephone issues or data/network connectivity (not including wireless). No prior authorization is required before submitting repair requests. Repair requests are placed in queue on a first-reported, first-repaired basis with the exception of major, or emergency services outages. Repair work typically takes priority over other types of service work. As always, please plan ahead for any routine, adds, moves or changes.
This service is for non-UM customer access to UM telephone services. Use this service if you are leasing space from UM and need a new telephone service. This service is available to non-UM entities who do, or will, lease space from UM.
